For a tl;dr, heres the document I used to present my final project (edited for context) For the first half of this class, we had to take a creative process like weaving, knitting, or making chains, change the process to create a 3D object, and discover something new about the process. Some examples are here (slides 20-28). I was inspired by these chocolate balloon bowls, where you dip a balloon in melted chocolate and pop the balloon when the chocolate is set, but  I wanted to somehow constrain the balloons to be amorphous or irregular I had to first figure out how I would constrain the balloon. I tried thin strips of duct tape, but the irregularities werent pronounced enough. I followed this  tutorial for making stress balls using slime and fishnets. The amount of slime I needed was way too much, and removing the slime after the chocolate step was going to be difficult. I tried fishnets- I needed to cut portions of the netting because the holes were too small for the balloon to squeeze through. I made a net using string, which gave me more control over the size of the holes, but the net-making process took way too long Heres some failed attempts with chocolate. The warm chocolate had slightly melted the balloon so the chocolate and the balloon got stuck together. I found this video on how to make balloon bowls using sugar syrup, which is way hotter than melted chocolate. The trick to keeping the balloon from melting was to fill the balloon with water to absorb the heat (higher specific heat). I also coated the balloon and fishnets with cooking spray to help it release and I dipped the balloons multiple times to get a thicker shell. My friend Pete  got the idea to put multiple inflated water balloons inside of a normal balloon, and then use a metal straw to suck the air out of the normal balloon to make the normal balloon contour to the shape of the water balloons The two methods made very different shapes and I made a few of each type: An arrow pointing right Previous An arrow pointing right Next I love that the shells looked kind of grotesque, evoking ideas of insect larvae or aliens, but were made of something so delicious. The second half of this class had us turn our object and into a vessel tailored specifically to hold a medium (like water or sand). My object was already kind of a vessel, but I still needed to choose a medium and change the bowl to fit the mediums needs. Of course, I chose insects. My friend Anna has pet bearded dragons so she keeps live worms in her room. I really wanted to see them burrow through chocolate, but because of health/animal rights reasons I was only allowed to use the ants living in East Campus. The worms looked really cool when I put them in the chocolate just for photos (warning for worm imagery) If ants could do the labor of making complex structures for me, I would provide shelter or food for them, resulting in a symbiotic relationship. In order to make these structures more interesting, I wanted multiple separate layers for the ants to explore. I tried making concentric bowls by cutting them in half using a hot knife and sealing the bowls back up inside each other with melted chocolate. This wasnt very elegant because of the visible seam after gluing the halves back together. I decided to use alternating layers of chocolate and plaster, where the plaster layers would only cover half of the balloon, and I would rotate the balloon so the location of the plaster-half would be different each time. So by the time I figured all of this out, the weather had gotten warm and the ants stopped coming inside. I needed a way to simulate the disintegration of the chocolate I used a pipette and hot water to melt patches of the chocolate, imagining how the ants would create paths and patches in the chocolate while being unable to eat through the plaster. You can just type away and get down all your thoughts, so later you can pull from that and have a plethora of sub-topics to choose from. Free writing helped me in my Truth Essay tremendously. In today’s society finding true creditable sources are hard to come by. Pathetic Fallacy in Romeo and Juliet in Act 3 Scene 1 Essay Romeo and Juliet is one of the most famous plays written by Shakespeare, it is famous for its intense romance. It was written in the 17th century and by reading the play it is quite obvious that people at that time had very different views on life than the present time. At the time of Shakespeare, religion was an extremely serious matter, things such as honour and the importance of family were extremely valued and any that went against or ridiculed these beliefs were considered criminals. For these reasons Shakespeare decided he would set the entire play in Italy to avoid confrontation from the people. The main scene of the play will be analysed, Act 3 Scene 1, in this scene the mood of the play changes from happiness to sadness and changes the whole play, making it a key scene in Romeo and Juliet. The techniques used by Shakespeare, such as pathetic fallacy, to create tension in this dramatic part of the play will also be analysed. Before this scene there is already a certain degree of tension throughout the play; the most obvious one is before the beginning, the prologue, which tells the audience that this story will end in tragedy, thus ultimately death. In Act 1 Scene 1 there is a fight between the two houses Capulet and Montague, in this scene there is a lot of tension and hatred What, drawn and talk peace? I hate the word, as I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee. Have at thee coward. In this scene it also shows how easily the two houses can start a brawl with no concern for the civilian lives. The brawl is interrupted by the Prince, who states that if there is anymore fighting between the houses the house responsible will suffer the death penalty; the tension created at this point is recalled throughout all of the play. The play develops and becomes quite confusing for the audience, Romeo states he is out of love and then later on within seconds falls in love with Juliet at the Capulets party, there is als o an abundant amount of tension when Romeo and his friends go to their most hated houses party without an invitation. After Romeo falls in love, Romeo discovers that Juliet is a Capulet; even so he decides to risk his life just to see Juliet later on in Act 2 Scene 2. The events described in the previous paragraph create a lot of tension early on in the play. At the beginning of Act 3 Scene 1 the fear of Benvolio encountering the Capulets in public is apparent I pray thee good Mercutio lets retire, the day is hot, the Capulets are abroad. And if we meet we shall not scape a brawl, for now these hot days, is the mad blood stirring this is a perfect example of a pathetic fallacy, this is a technique used by Shakespeare to give inanimate objects, such as the weather, human emotions, this helps the audience understand better the mood of the scene. In this case Shakespeare uses the weather to represent Benvolios fear. Benvolio uses the weather to try and convince Mercutio to retire because he knows that is they have an encounter with the Capulets a fight will surely follow. From the use of this technique the audience is given an insight of the fear and tension the characters are feeling at that particular moment. Despite these warnings Mercutio refuses to leave because he is not scared of an encounter with the Capulets. At the beginning of the scene only Benvolio and Mercutio are there, the tension is rising because of Mercutios refusal to go home. When Tybalt and the Capulets arrive there is a major increase in tension because there will surely be a fight, as they start to argue and then eventually start to fight there is a great amount of tension. When Romeo enters the tension starts to increase rapidly as Tybalt approaches him after disregarding the fight with Mercutio. Tybalt starts to fight Romeo, which results in the death of Mercutio, because of this Romeo is infuriated and kills Tybalt when he returns. Mercutio is a very humorous and energetic character and is always quite happy to fight; this is probably because he is of neither houses and thus plays a very neutral part in the play. He is also related to the Prince and probably believes he will not get involved between the fights of the two houses. Because of this behaviour he often puts other characters in danger, especially in this scene when he refuses to leave to avoid a fight. Mercutio loves to play with words and can easily anger people with his jousting. Mercutios jousting and carelessness for a fight is very dangerous because if a fight arose between the two houses nobody would try to stop them, this situation creates further tension. Mercutio seems to enjoy the amount of tension increasing and is part of his personality. The knowledge of the major possibility of a fight starting alone creates a lot of tension; another thing that creates tension is the knowledge that whichever house starts the fight will be punished by the death penalty. The audience knows that the play will end in death and thus the tension builds up when the scenario of a possible tragedy is apparent, this is called dramatic irony. The language used by Shakespeare is the main cause of tension during this scene. One of the best examples of language used are the phrases used by Mercutio towards Tybalt thou art a villain, Good king of cats, by my heal I care not, A plague aboth your houses! Those are some of the many quotes of language used by Shakespeare to create tension. When Mercutio and Tybalt encounter each other a verbal fight breaks out, Shakespeare uses these two contrasting characters to create tension. Whilst they insult each other the audience know this is going to escalate into a fight and thus tension is created. Although Shakespeares language is elaborate it is apparent that they are insulting each other, and through the escalation of tension the audience comes to realise that the prophecy that was said in the prologue is about to become true. Benvolo is very important character in the play. He takes the part of the narrator in most scenes; he also helps recap events when there is a fast paced scene. He told the Prince what happened when the two houses clashed and Mercutio and Tybalt died. His helps the audience have a better understanding of the play and makes it easier to understand. He keeps the audience up to date and helps the tension remain throughout the play. A interesting thing to note is that characters of high rank always talk in riming couplets, this is Shakespeares way to tell the audience they are important. 500 Days of Summer Analysis | Reversing Gender Roles in Film Narrator: This is a story of boy meets girlYou should know up front, this is not a love story. (500) Days of Summer (Marc Webb, 2009) as Chasing Amy (Kevin Smith, 1997), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Michael Gondry, 2004) is another of these revelations full of originality which differs from the romantic comedy patterns. The film is presented as an alternative romantic comedy mainly because of three main reasons. To begin with, it anticipates to the spectator that the two main characters are not going to finish together, which as we have previously seen breaks the mould of the romantic comedy genre. Then, it introduces to the viewer that the happy ending one usually deduces from romantic comedies it is not going to be seen. Finally there is a variation of the representation of the traditional gender roles of heterosexual relationships. Like Kaufmans film, this nonlinear story about a romance is told after the couples failure however it lacks a component present in Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind: it does not present a possible second chance for Tom and Summer. Reversing gender role of romantic comedy stereotypes. Romantic love (Tom) versus Giddens Confluent Love (Summer). Romantic comedy is a genre that is commonly labelled as being a womens genre. Although there are exceptions in the genre, there is usually a heroine who a female viewer can identify and empathise with (Claire Mortimer, 20). In contrast to Mortimers quote alternative romantic comedies frequently focus on gender role reversals setting out to prove the male hero can be as sensitive and desperate for love as the female characters are as happens in films such as Pagafantas, (Borja Cobeaga, 2009) where Chema (Gorka Otxoa) is madly in love with Claudia (Sabrina Garcianera) but she sees him merely as a friend. In (500) Days of Summer gender reversal is represented through the portrayal of the characters Tom and Summer. In the case of Tom, he has more in common with the heroines of romantic comedies that are hopelessly romantic and desperate to find the one, they cannot imagine themselves being happy without a man, too caught up in their obsession with romance to notice the men who could bring it into their lives. Tom totally represents the hopeless and perhaps foolish romantic who believes in love and wants that one great person in his life: Tom: I love how she makes me feel, like anythings possible, or like life is worth it. In relation to this gender role reversal Giddens believes that today, women have a far greater degree of equality: In the current era, ideals of romantic love tend to fragment under the pressure of female sexual emancipation and autonomy (Giddens, 1992: 61). It is because of this, that romantic gender roles and expectations in todays society have changed. This change Giddens refers to is represented in the character of Summer. As it was previously mentioned in the typical romantic comedy women are portrayed as obsessive as the relationship-desperate characters as happens in Gone With the Wind (Victor Fleming, 1939) where during the Civil War Scarlett OHara (Vivien Leigh) is desperately in love with Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard) who is going to get marry to another woman or as it also occurs in My Best Friends Wedding (P.J. Hogan, 1997) where Julianne Potter (Julia Roberts) acts as an obsessive and desperate character trying to avoid Michaels wedding. Summer plays the opposite role to Scarlet and Julianne: she acts as a character that rejects commitment, emotionally withdrawn wrong man usually presented in romantic comedies and looking for a romance with no commitment moving away from the role of the stereotypical heroine in the romantic comedy: Tom: What happens if you fall in love? Summer: Well, you dont believe that, do you? Tom: Its love. Its not Santa Claus. Tom acts under the influence of romantic pop songs and romantic comedies considering that it is possible for love to exist. Men, like women, fall in love and have done so throughout the recorded past (Giddens, 1992:58). Tom is represented as the character who believes in this forever lasting love (romantic love). He still does not realise that love is so much more complicated than his concept of it, and that requires, among other things, the understanding of Summer. In contrast to romantic love, Giddens introduces the term of confluent love. He claims that confluent love is active, contingent love, and therefore jars with the for-ever, one-and-only qualities of the romantic love complex (Giddens, 1992: 61). In relation to this concept Summer is the character that portrays the notion of confluent love. Summer sees the relationship from another perspective far from a traditional model of love: till death us do part (Tom) versus to see how it works and whether it is convenient (Summer). Although she accepts to begin the relationship she warns Tom that she does not believe in love when she says: Theres no such thing as love, its fantasy and does not want a boyfriend, and no matter how intimate they become she insists that they are merely friends: Summer: Summer: Were just fr Tom: Tom: [Interrupting] Tom: No! Dont pull that with me! This is not how you treat your friend! Kissing in the copy room? Holding hands in IKEA? Shower sex? Come on! Friends my balls! This gender role reversal could be identified as one way in which the film breaks with the romantic comedy formula in which the image of Tom is feminized and Summer represents the dominant character of the film adhering obvious conventions (boy meets girl; boy and girl face obstacles to their romantic union; boy and girl conquer obstacles to find true love) from the romantic comedy formula.

The Great Escape Movie and Real Story

The movie The Great Escape was based on the escape of many prisoners from a Nazi prison camp during World War II. Unfortunately, only a couple of the escapees made it to safety before being captured again. Once the prisoners were captured, they were sent to a Nazi prison camp called Stalag. If they had done nothing except passing their time patiently they would have been able to make it through the war safely. However, the Germans were rather dependent upon their adversaries not putting up resistance. They had to be defeated and this would take a collective effort. The men who are the real heroes are those that took the risks and made the sacrifices. The â€Å"Great Escape† was showing the prisoners of war (POWs) resistance towards the fascist state of Germany and this is what made this prison break so much different than that of any other Hollywood movie involving a prison break. Even though the plan that they had set forth failed, that isn’t the point the point was that they took it into their own hands and tried as hard as they could to escape. The movie was based off of a true story about a group of Allied POW’s that attempted to escape from what was thought to be an impenetrable Nazi prison camp during World War II. At the beginning, the Nazi’s gather some of the most devious and troublesome POWs and placed them into a prison camp. Soon after arriving there, they are already plotting their escape. They plan on building three separate tunnels that they refer to as â€Å"Tom†, â€Å"Dick†, and â€Å"Harry†. One of the ways that the men removed dirt from the tunnels in progress was by hiding bags in their trousers to spread the dirt over the camp, under the guard’s noses. On the first day there were many failed attempts at escaping, eventually they settled in. one of the men is told that if he tries to escape one more time he will be shot, and is placed back with the rest of the POWs. Being locked up with every escape artist in Germany, one of the men tries to plot a way to break 250 prisoners out of Stalag. The intent of this operation was to confuse the enemy to the point of them moving as many troops from the front lines to search for all of the escapees that it would be a waste of resources and troops. The prisoners ere at work on the three tunnels and two of them were discovered before completion. Eventually tunnel â€Å"Tom† was completed but was found to be 20 feet short of the woods, due to this, only 76 men were able to escape. Almost all of the POWs were either recaptured and/or killed. Only three of the men made it to safety. The real story of the â€Å"Great Escape† was â€Å"the mass escape of 76 Allied POWs from Stalag Luf t III in March of 1944. † It all started when and Allied aircrew was shot down during World War II. The war camp was being run by the Luftwaffe, called Stalag Luft which was short for Stammlager Luft. The camp was opened May of 1942. The German Luftwaffe had respect for their fellow flyers and their treatment of the prisoners should not be confused with that of the SS or Gestopo. The Luftwaffe treated the POWs well even though there was a very inconsistent supply of food. The security was very strict but life was not intolerable for the prisoners. The camp grew to hold 10,000 POWs, was 59 acres and had 5 miles of perimeter fencing. Food in the camp would have been a major issue if it weren’t for the International Red Cross. Most people would think that the guards got plenty of food, but realistically they weren’t too much better off. Also; the Red Cross provided the prisoners with replacement clothing, shower items, coffees and teas, jams, meats, sugars, and all of these were distributed equally amongst the people. There was prolonged starvation and if it weren’t for the Red Cross parcels things would have been much worse. Some of the captured officers were paid an equivalent of their pay and were able to purchase things, but it was strictly forbidden to be in possession of the real German currency, and this was a vital aid in escape. Another thing that was strictly forbidden was civilian clothing. Most prisoners were commonly dressed in uniforms and any footwear they had, and any man that had civilian clothing was sure to keep it safe. One thing that was vital was to carry and aircrew badge, otherwise upon escaping they could be thought to be a spy. Some of the finest escape artists of the Allied forces were placed in Luft III, and one of those men being Squadron leader Roger J Bushell who was shot down May 1940 during the Battle of France. He collected the most skilled forgers, tailors, tunnel engineers and surveillance experts and told them his plan of sending 250 men outside of the wire fences of Stalag. He knew that this would cause tremendous problems for his enemy because it would divert both men and resources to capture the escapees. His plan wasn’t really intending to return men to their homeland but to cause a major problem with the Germans. He decided to go through with this plan although he had already been told that if he escaped or tried to escape again it would result in him being shot. Security at Stalag was intended to be the best, but there were some flaws with it, one of these flaws being that the Germans were known around the world as being â€Å"goons†. They recived this name because they were definitely not the ‘cream of the Luftwaffe’ and were well known for shooting first and asking questions later. They could also be considered ‘trigger happy’ since there were many incidents of unnecessary use of firearms. The German guards that were highly skilled at detecting escape were called â€Å"ferrets†. They had the ability to enter the compound when they please and search any hut without any given warning. They’d normally search for bright yellow sand because that was an indication that a tunnel was in progress. When they found a tunnel, they would allow it to keep being built until it was close to completion then they would drive heavy vehicles around the camp grounds to collapse the tunnel. The prisoners had three tunnels going and they were named â€Å"Tom†, â€Å"Dick†, and â€Å"Harry†. â€Å"Tom† was started in Hut 105, â€Å"Harry† was in Hut 104, and â€Å"Dick† was concealed beneath a shower drain under Hut 122 and would be under several feet of water, and the Germans never found it. The sudden ‘pounces’ by the ferrets caused consistent nightmares for the tunnel diggers, during one occasion the door to Harry was replaced and fully camouflaged in twenty seconds leaving no sign of a tunnel entrance. The formation of these tunnels wasn’t the easiest because they were under ground and there is limited space to displace the dirt removed to create the tunnel. On method of removing the dirt from the tunnel areas was by filing long thin bags that the men slipped inside their trousers and would walk around losing the sand through a hole in the bottom of it. These men were known as ‘penguins’. Unfortunately, one of the men was careless and was spotted by a ferret when he was walking around the compound so they knew that a tunnel was under way, they just didn’t know where. The process of tunneling was very dangerous, because if a tunnel caved in there was only enough time to cover your head and wait for the ‘number two’ to dig you out. No one ever died, but a few many were forced to stay off work due to suffocation. In order to make these tunnels dependable, they used approximately 4,000 bed boards to form the shoring. These bed boards came from the beds of the prisoners. Most of them became used to sleeping on the barest of supports. The size of the tunnel depended upon that of the boards, so the tunnel is approximately 2 feet square. A wooden railway was put into the tunnel to remove sand along the tunnel. One of the men had spotted an 800 foot coil of electrical wire and took it to use it for lighting through the tunnel. The Germans were aware that something was going on but they were never able to find anything. Eventually they moved 19 of the top suspects which had included 6 of the key men in this operation to another prison camp only weeks before the escape was planned to take place. Luckily, Bushell’s role in the escape was well camouflaged and the Germans had left him behind. When the men were transferred without warning the work didn’t stop. Soon â€Å"Dick† was abandoned because the area that it was to exit at there was a new prison camp built there. Issues arose with the displacement of sand and â€Å"Dick† was eventually used for disposal of sand. When â€Å"Tom† was near completion, it was discovered by a ferret and the Germans destroyed it all, so all work was shifted to â€Å"Harry†. In March of 1944, â€Å"Harry† reached a length of 336 feet. Upon completion, Flight Lieutenant Johnny Bull had discovered that the tunnel was well short of the tree line and was within 30 yards of the nearest watch tower. During this time snow was laying on the ground so it was near impossible to not leave a trail and this caused the escape to slow down greatly and the situation was worsened by the occurance of an air raid. The Germans were forced to shut off all power, so there was no light in the tunnel. Instead of one man a minute the escape was reduced down to only one dozen per hour, so any man with an escape number higher than 100 had no chance of getting out this night. By dawn, only 76 men had escaped and made their way beyond the woods. One man tugged at the signal rope, meaning â€Å"stay put† but the man making his way through the tunnel though that it meant the opposite signal, so he emerged from the tunnel right under the feet of one of the guards. For some seconds he did not see the tracks in the snow and body-heat steam drifting upwards from the tunnel mouth, but he eventually noticed the signs, raised his rifle, and fired a wild shot at the man trying to escape and blew his whistle. The man that preceded him was waiting in the woods and decided to run for it and so did so did the man that was coming out of the tunnel, but the next man in the tunnel was apprehended at rifle point, stood up and surrendered. All the men who had been waiting in the tunnel managed to return to Hut 104, burned their false papers, and ate their carefully saved food rations because the Germans were sure to confiscate them. The ferrets didn’t find the entrance to the tunnel, and by the time they reached the hut, the men were sound asleep. In the darkness of the night few of the escapees had found the railway station and missed their train and were waiting on the platforms trying to avoid each other. Most of the men were captured before they were even able to leave the area. This movie was very accurate in comparison to the real story, which I find quite surprising for a Hollywood film. This was a great movie of an escape plan that didn’t quite work as well as it could have, but none the less it was for sure a great escape.

NO WONDER THEN THAT A STUDENT HAS TO DISCHARGE DUTIES TO HIS OWN SELF, TO HIS PARENTS, TO HIS FAMILY, TO HIS COUNTRY AND TO THE WIDE WORLD. MISTAKE ONCE COMMITTED IN THIS PERIOD CAN HARDLY BE RECOVERED. THE SUCCESS OF OUR LIFE DEPENDS ON THE BEST USE OF OUR STUDENT LIFE.

What Is the Coattail Effect in Politics

The coattail effect is a term in American politics used to describe the impact an extremely popular or unpopular candidate has on other candidates in the same election. A popular candidate can help sweep other Election Day hopefuls into office. Meanwhile, an unpopular candidate can have the opposite effect, dashing the hopes of those running for offices lower down on the ballot. The term coattail effect in politics is derived from the loose material on a jacket that hangs below the waist. A candidate who wins an election because of another candidates popularity is said to be swept in on the coattails. Typically, the term coattail effect is used to describe a presidential nominees impact on congressional and legislative races.  The excitement of the election helps to increase voter turnout, and more voters may be inclined to vote a straight party ticket.   Coattail Effect in 2016 In the 2016 presidential election, for example, the Republican establishment became increasingly concerned about its candidates for U.S. Senate and House when it became clear Donald Trump was a formidable candidate. Democrats, meantime, had their own polarizing candidate to worry about: Hillary Clinton. Her scandal-plagued political career failed to generate enthusiasm among the Democratic Partys progressive wing and left-leaning independents. It could be said that both Trump and Clinton had coattail effects on the 2016 congressional and legislative elections. The surprising surge for Trump among working-class white voters — men and women alike — who fled the Democratic Party because of his promise to renegotiate trade deals and levy stiff tariffs against other countries helped elevate Republicans. The GOP emerged from the election in control of both the U.S. House and Senate, as well as dozens of legislative chambers and governors mansions across the U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan credited Trump with helping the Republicans secure majorities in both the House and Senate. The House majority is bigger than expected, we won more seats than anyone expected, and much of that is thanks to Donald Trump...Donald Trump provided the kind of coattails that got a lot of people over the finish line so that we could maintain our strong House and Senate majorities. Now we have important work to do, Ryan said after the November 2016 election. Riding Coattails A strong coattail effect often results in a  wave election, when  one major political party  wins substantially more races than the other. The opposite usually happens two years later,  when the presidents party loses seats in Congress. Another example of a coattail effect is the 2008 election of Democrat Barack Obama and his partys pickup of 21 seats in the House that year. Republican George W. Bush, at the time, was one of the most unpopular presidents in modern history. This was largely due to his decision to invade Iraq in what became an increasingly unpopular war by the end of his second term. Obama energized Democrats to vote. His coattails in 2008 were short in a quantitative sense. But he was able to enliven the Democratic base, attract large numbers of young and independent voters, and help to increase the partys registration totals in a way that boosted Democratic candidates up and down the ticket, wrote political analyst Rhodes Cook. Cell Phones Can Help Keep A Parents Child Safe - 883 Words

Almost every child has asked his or her parents for a cell phone. While there may be plenty of adequate reasons for parents to say no, there are also some reasons for parents to say yes. That child may want a cell phone so that he or she can talk to his or her friends, to get apps, or to be able to say that he or she has one, but parents can benefit from their child have a cell phone too. Parents should say yes to their child having a cell phone because it can help keep their child safe, keeps them in touch and up to date, can be the source of discipline or punishment, and they are affordable. Cell phones can help keep a parents child safe. If there was ever a situation where a parent had to talk to his or her child, or vice versa, all that parent would have to do is call. Also, with the GPS, parents can locate their child as long as that child has his or her phone on. If a parent’s child ever runs away or goes missing, the police can track him or her down. Beowulf Analysis of the Epic Essay The Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf is the most important work of Old English literature, and is well deserved of the distinction. The epic tells the story of a hero, a Scandinavian prince named Beowulf, who rids the Danes of the monster Grendel, a descendent of Cain, and of his exploits fighting Grendels mother and a Dragon. Throughout the epic, the Anglo-Saxon story teller uses many elements to build a certain depth to the characters. Just a few of the important character elements in Beowulf are Wealth Honor, Biblical Paganistic, and Man vs. Wild themes. Many of the characters in Beowulf are, like in most epics, defined by their status. But, in addition to status, the Anglo-Saxon culture also adds an element of honor. To the Anglo-Saxons, a characters importance, as well as their wealth and status, where measured not only in monetary terms, but it was also measured in terms of honor, fame, and accomplishments. Hrothgar, king of the Danes, is one example of the Anglo-Saxon measurement of importance in Beowulf. In Canto 1 the story teller describes his wealth and importance, not as mounds of gold or jewels, but instead as his ability to the Danes to such glory. and as his tendency to In battle, the common pasture untouched, and taking no lives. Through this display of compassion for the commoner who doesnt fight in battles, Hrothgar proves the full extent of his honor and therefore the extent of his wealth and status. Beowulf, the hero-prince, also proves his true wealth and status through his deeds as defender of the Danes.. As he fights and defeats Grendel, Beowulf Earns Fame and wealth from his companions, and from the Danes, but more importantly, he earns honor raising him to the level of an archetypal hero. Grendel, on the other hand, is the total opposite of Beowulf. He has no wealth, no honor, and he in infamous as an evil killer. This lack of wealth and honor defines Grendel as a symbol of evil and corruption. In addition to using Honor and wealth to define a characters character, the story-tellers have incorporated alternating Biblical and Paganistic motifs in the epic-poem. The original Epic was obviously Paganistic due to the time period of its creation. But, as time wore on, the rewriting and touching up of the manuscripts by various sources including religious monks, caused the characters to have slight Christian characteristics. These Christian themes have become very important to the epic to add am element of depth that wouldnt be possible in modern times due to the lost of the Anglo-Saxon culture and beliefs. An example of the Biblical motif in Beowulf is Grendel. Grendel it biblically described as evil in this excerpt: was spawned in that slime, Conceived by a pair of those monsters born Of Cain, murderous creatures banished By God, punished forever for the crime Of Abels death. The Almighty drove Those demons out, and their exile was bitter, Shut away from  men; they split Into a thousand forms of evilspirits And feinds, goblins, monsters, giants, A brood forever opposing the Lords Will, and again and again defeated. The Biblical reference in the epic has become a modern day archetypal motif, and serves to give the listener an idea of the extent of Grendels pure evil and gives a logical explanation for Grendels murderous behavior. This example, not only shows the evil in Grendels nature, but also the torture in his heart caused by his Banishment from God. It serves to give the reader an idea of why Grendel would kill the Danes for no reason other than their happiness. Beowulf also has a religious motif to his character. "Song's From the Portuguese XLIII" and "O What is That Sound" EssayOne example of this is in Canto 6 line 381 in which Hrothgar states, Our Holy Father had sent as a sign of His grace, a mark of His favor, to help us defeat Grendel and end that terror. This religious description shows Beowulf as a sort of messiah sent by god to save man from evil. But, more than that, since Beowulf is in fact not a messiah, this description shows the good in Beowulfs heart and the purpose of his mission. Another Biblical reference in Beowulf is shown in the tower of Herot which is very similar to the tower of Babel in the fact that its built as a sign of superiority and accomplishment. Like Babel, though, Herot only serves as a symbol of downfall more than one of glory because it causes many deaths and the coming of Grendel. vApart from Wealth, Honor, and Paganistic vs. Biblical themes and motifs, character is also shown through a certain Man vs. Wild motif. This motif shows the difference between mankinds ways good, and evils wild nature evil. Grendel for one, is totally wild and is therefore shown as evil. His wild home, Grendel, who haunted the moors, the wild marshes, and made his home in a hell not hell but earth. shows his wild, untamed, and therefor evil nature. Grendels wilderness is countered in mankinds ways, especially Beowulfs. Beowulf is tame and civilized, the epitomy of goodness and purity. Beowulf doesnt fight evil in a wild manner, rather, as shown in his first battle with Grendel. First off, Beowulf is pure and shows this before his battle when he removes his armor and vows not to use a weapon to defeat Grendel. Defeating Grendel, he shows that man, without armor and weapons, can defeat evil in any form including that of his foe Grendel. This deed serves throughout the epic serves as a symbol of Beowulfs Goodness. Beowulf has many other such archetypal, symbolic themes and motifs, but the most important themes that serve to add depth to the characters are the wealth, honor, religious, man, and wildness themes. These themes dont only serve to define a character, but they also factor in as a motive for their actions.

Peer approval was one of the barriers that the RTA campaign experienced when it aimed at discouraging speeding among male youths. Moreover, the young male drivers viewed speeding as a way of expr essing their masculinity and showing off their prowess skills in driving. Hence, as the RTA campaign tried to depict speeding as a socially unacceptable behaviour, it was like denying the youths their masculinity. Andreasen (2005) claims, â€Å"barriers in the environment external to the individual make it difficult or impossible to act in employing the downstream approach of social marketing† (p.74). Hence, it was hard for the RTA campaign to influence the youths using the downstream approach because their culture approved speeding. Moreover, unsupportive attitude of the youths is another barrier, as they do not like driving at low speeds. Youths associate low speeding with rawness and female drivers who cannot drive well. Competitively, the youths were struggling to gain experience in speeding and become veteran drivers, while the RTA campaign restricted the same. To overcome barriers of peer approval and unsupportive attitude, the RTA campaign employed upstream and downstr eam approaches of social marketing by involving the media, friends, family, and community. The use of media ensured that the campaign gained extensive awareness among youths and the entire society. Moreover, the RTA campaign empowered the community to participate actively in discouraging speeding behaviours because a significant number of drivers speed on the roads of New South Wales. Donovan and Henley (2010) state that a social marketer can enhance the effectiveness of a campaign strategy by â€Å"adopting upstream approaches that create changes in the environment, as well as downstream approaches targeting individual undesirable behaviours† (p.45). Friends and family members are downstream influencers who helped in overcoming peer pressure and unsupportive attitude, which were barriers to the RTA campaign. Thus, by employing both upstream and downstream approaches, the RTA campaign managed to overcome barriers and change behaviours of youths through the influence of commun ity members. The RTA campaign has significant benefits to the New South Wales. Following its launch, the RTA campaign has considerably reduced cases of accidents in New South Wales because many youths have reduced their speed of driving. Hence, reduced rate of accidents due to speeding is a considerable measurable benefit. Another benefit of the campaign is that there is increased awareness of speeding, thus depicting speeding among youth as unacceptable behaviour in the society. Brennan and Binney (2010) state that about 94% of the general population recognised anti-speeding message in the RTA campaign, while 58% of the young males realised that speeding is unacceptable behaviour in the community. Such figures indicate that the RTA campaign was quite successful in creating a culture in the community that perceives speeding as a socially unacceptable behaviour. Thus, New South Wales has significantly benefited from the campaign, as many youths will no longer speed and cause accident s that lead to loss of lives and cause injuries. Behaviour Change Models Social Norm Theory Social norm theory is one of the theories that explain the change in behaviour among male youths due to the RTA campaign. Social norm theory postulates that change of behaviour of an individual occurs to influence one’s perception on what is normal. Schultz et al. assert that social norms influence human behaviours because they â€Å"not only spur, but also guide action in the direct and meaningful ways† (2007, p.429). In the case of speeding amongst youths, the theory explains that the culture of speeding emerged due to pluralistic ignorance, which made youths view speeding as a socially acceptable behaviour. From the perspective of the youths, speeding was quite acceptable because it was a means of displaying their masculinity as well as prowess in driving. Speeding was one of the social norms that the youths practised because it was a trendy activity for the young male driver s to exhibit their skills. Through their pluralistic ignorance, the youths assumed that all drivers were speeding, and thus they wanted to attain the status of speeding like everyone else. According to the social norm theory, an intervention that exposes the reality of the norms is indispensable in correcting pluralistic ignorance. Although the youths were driving at high speeds, they were comfortable because it was normal according to their norms. In this view, the RTA campaign developed a strategy that focused on changing the youths’ perceptions. The perceptions of the young male drivers were contrary to the reality. While the young male drivers perceived speeding as fun, exciting, and expression of masculinity, the society perceived it as a dangerous affair. Thus, the RTA campaign employed both downstream and upstream strategies of social marketing to influence the community to perceive speeding as unacceptable behaviour. Terry and Hogg (1999) state that a change of human behaviour occurs through a systematic process where dominant social norms influence the development of behaviour. Thus, for the RTA campaign to overcome dominant behaviour of speeding among the youths, it empowered the community to create a culture that views speeding as a despicable behaviour. Theory of Planned Behaviour The theory of planned behaviour postulates that behaviour is a product of benefits, social norms, and cost associated with a given activity. Before one performs a given activity, one has to analyse the benefits and costs associated with social norms. Therefore, the young male drivers found pleasure in speeding because they got recognition from their peers coupled with expressing their masculinity. According to Armitage and Christian (2003), attitudes predict behaviours for social norms moderate the attitude-behaviour relationship. Hence, the behaviour that the young male drivers exhibited reflected their attitudes. To overcome the unsupportive attitudes of the youn g male drivers, the RTA campaign aimed at changing attitudes of the community members so that they can have overwhelming influence on the attitudes of the young male drivers. Ultimately, the RTA changed the community attitudes and perceptions, branded speeding unacceptable behaviour, and reduced cases of accidents due to speeding. Although the young male drivers attempted to hold on to their speeding behaviours, they failed because the community was already empowered to influence their behaviours. Conner and Armitage (1998) assert that the theory of planned behaviour examines attitudes and perceptions relative to social norms of the people. As the RTA campaign changed perceptions and attitudes of the community members who are the majority, the minority young male drivers were unable to resist change. Hence, when community members viewed speeding as a despicable behaviour, the young male drivers followed the perceptions of the community. Eventually, the young male drivers had to comp ly with the demands of the society because the societal norms perceived speeding as unacceptable behaviour among the youths. Buckworth and Dishman (2002) argue, â€Å"Behaviour is predicted by intentions and intentions are predicted by attitude and societal norms† (p.27), which have overwhelming influence on human behaviour. Therefore, the RTA campaign influenced behaviours of the young male drivers to drive at moderate speeds. Conclusion The RTA campaign is the most successful campaign in dealing with speed driving because it managed to change the behaviour of young male drivers as well as other drivers. Despite the many challenges associated with social marketing, the RTA campaign employed both upstream and downstream strategies, which empowered the community, family, and friends to effect changes in behaviour of young male drivers, who perceived speeding as fun, exciting, and a way of expressing their masculinity. Analysis of the RTA campaign shows that it complied with fa ctors necessary for successful social marketing. Moreover, the RTA applied theory of social norm and the theory of planned behaviour in changing speeding behaviour of young male drivers in New South Wales.
